One riddle is shared every day, and it goes like this:

You are shown the satellite/aerial image of an undisclosed city. It's quite zoomed in, so you are shown something like a square kilometer of the inner city center (less than half a square mile). No descriptions are given, no labels, landmarks, etc.

Based on what you see, you can make a guess which city this might be. The input text box helps you with auto-correct and suggesting actually existing cities. For instance, this is what you see today (February 17th, 2024):

So, what city could that be? Make a guess, type it in the textbox and click "Try"!

If you guess correctly, congratulations, you have solved today's mystery!

Most likely, though, you will guess incorrectly. Then, two things happen: Firstly, the game will tell you how far away you were from the correct guess (in miles or kilometers). And secondly, the game will zoom our a bit further, and you may guess again. Overall, you have 6 tries every day to solve the riddle.

Of course, don't use a map while playing - that would be cheating, right?

Some initial tips when playing:

use the input box for your advantage. If you know the country, but not the city, type the country in and see what suggestions are provided.

have a look at the details: how densely are the houses packed? What material (color) are the roofs?

have a look at typical buildings: do you find churches? Airports? Train stations? What shape are residential buildings (single family homes, large multi-story appartement blocks).

have a look at the roads: do they use left or right side traffic? What color is the roadway, and are the road markings? What types of vehicles are used? Do you see traffic lights, or roundabouts?

have a look at the ground, in open areas or parks: is it lavish green? Dirty brown?

look at the shadows (of buildings, monuments, trees, etc). They might give away whether the location is on the norther or southern hemisphere, or close to the equator.

Use the distance to the correct location to let you guide for your next guess: was it in the "hundreds" of kilometers, then you might be in the right country or a neighboring one already. Is it in the thousands, you might be on the right continent but not in the right country. Is it above, say, 7000 kilometers, then try a different continent for your next guess.

I'll share some more details in follow-up posts as I play along. There is a new riddle every day! If you intend to play it repeatedly, make sure you login in with your Google Account to remember the credit across different machines.

Christian Wirthhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12687078604890565949noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3976898942253309934.post-91332458486955951392023-02-21T04:34:00.005-08:002023-02-21T04:34:57.360-08:00Ärztezentren in LinzDie oberösterreichische Landeshauptstadt Linz verfügt über eine ausgezeichnete gesundheitliche Versorgung. Both employees as well as employers need to understand that and find a new way of organizing work - and of organizing yourself, to stay productive and creative, reach your goals, and live a happy life.

The Way We're Working Isn't Working - The four forgotten needs that energize great performance
Tony Schwartz with Jean Gomes and Catherine McCarthy, Ph.D.

A great idea of this book is to summarize the "big ideas" at the end in a separate chapter. This way, after reading the book and probably being overwhelmed with all the good thoughts and ideas, you get a nice clean summary to transfer the ideas into practice.

Things I want to keep from this book are:

Exchange of time (employee) vs money (employer) is unsatisfactory for both sides

Humans need four sources of energy: physical (sustainability), emotional (security), mental (self-expression), and spiritual (significance). Reminds me of Maslow's pyramid.

Humans a built for short sprints of work (90 min max) with pauses after them. Make a pause, go for a walk, drink a coffee, take a nap! You will be more productive afterwards.

Strengths can be overused and turned against ourselves. You need to (somewhat) balance your strengths and your weaknesses.

Changes to be adopted is hard; it requires rituals to integrate change into our lives. (think of any diet).

Physical training. Every movement is better than no movement.

Eat less. Eat more frequently, smaller portions (5 times a day). Eat healthy.

Don't commute (by car, they mean, for a long time). Work from home. Or, at least travel off-peak.

Be aware of how you feel. The more you are, the more you are able to influence.

Be aware of your triggers

The impact of "bad" is worse than the impact of "good".

As a leader, show appreciation for the real achievements of your employees.

We are not able to multitask.

Use your whole brain.

Ausgangsdaten

Stromverbrauch in Relation

Using the Google Webmaster Tools (WMT) I recently saw that none of my images hosted in those wikis are indexed by Google. To be more precise: The description pages of the images are not indexed. All configuration seemed to be Google-friendly, for instance, a robots.txt existed and was configured correctly, an XML sitemap (including the image description pages) was sent to Googles WMT, no "noindex" or "nofollow" code was in the pages, etc.

So, why is Google not indexing my images?

During quite some research I found several other people describing in blog posts and discussion forum threads that they had similar problems. It took me quite some while to get a first real clue, though. Note that the URL of the description pages follows the same structure all the time: www.domain.com/wiki/Name.jpg Ok, that's only true if you use URL rewriting to get such "nice" URLs - if you use the basic URLs with index.php and a bunch of parameters to that, you might not have the problem in the first place. The important thing to note when looking at the URL: even though this is supposed to be an HTML page (describing the image), it ends in ".jpg" - as if it would actually be an image file. Apparently, google thinks that it is an image file and does not load and parse (and then, index) it.

I didn't find any simple solution for this without hacking Mediawiki source code.

There is one quite simple solution, though. You can adapt the URLs by simply adding a slash character ("/") to ALL URLs of your wiki. Then, www.domain.com/wiki/Main_Page becomes www.domain.com/wiki/Main_Page/ and media file description pages end up like www.domain.com/wiki/Name.jpg/ - which is a nice thing, as Google obviously supposes those URLs to be directories, thus loads and indexes those. After changing my wiki's URLs that way, the description pages were index after a few days.

To configure your wiki that way is quite simple. I give the description here for the standard way to rewrite MediaWiki URLs using mod_rewrite - if you used another technique, you have to adapt it to that tool.

In the file "LocalSetting.php" in your wiki directory there is a variable $wgArticlePath that you have to adapt. I added the slash there, so set it to:

$wgArticlePath = "/wiki/$1/";

That makes MediaWiki format all URLs correctly with the additional slash. Obviously, you also have to modify the mod_rewrite code, that resides in the .htaccess file:

RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteRule ^wiki/(.*)/ w/index.php?title=$1 [PT,L,QSA]
RewriteRule ^wiki/*$ wiki/Main_Page [L,QSA]
RewriteRule ^/*$ wiki/Main_Page [L,QSA]

Additionally, I added a few lines to rewrite the old URLs (without the slash), so that older links to my site don't end in nirvana but are forwarded to the new location. Acutally, I use a 301 http redirect to the new site, so I don't lose any link power. The code is not perfect, but works in most cases (it does not work when a slash is included in the article name itself):

RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteRule ^wiki/(.*)$ http://www.domain.com/wiki/$1/ [R=301,L]

Then, your site will be index by google as well. Have fun!

$wgArticlePath = "/wiki/$1/";

RewriteEngine On

RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f

RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d

RewriteRule ^wiki/(.*)/ w/index.php?title=$1 [PT,L,QSA]

RewriteRule ^wiki/*$ wiki/Hauptseite [L,QSA]

RewriteRule ^/*$ wiki/Hauptseite [L,QSA]

RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f

RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d

RewriteRule ^wiki/(.*)$ http://www.linzwiki.at/wiki/$1/ [R=301,L]

This might be a less pressing problem when using SVGs, but many of my JPEGs looked really really bad. The MediaWiki documentation suggest using ImageMagick instead of of GD (see http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Manual:Image_Administration#Image_thumbnailing). However, that's what I'm using.

Improving Quality
I've done two steps to improve the quality of the thumbnails. Both might or might not be applicable to your images - it often depends on the type of content you present, the quality and size of the images you upload and their content (images of nature, computer-generated graphs, etc.).

JPEG quality
MediaWiki uses an JPEG quality of "80%". This compresses the thumbnails (they are smaller and can be downloaded faster by the users). However, the quality suffers with that lower number, as more artifacts can be seen. I tried setting the quality to 95 %, resulting in significantly better images. Again, note that this results in larger image files and might not be applicable to your kind of images.

There doesn't seem to be any configuration setting in MediaWiki to set this compression quality in a nice way (like in LocalSettings.php). The value of 80% for JPGs seems to be hardcoded in ./includes/media/Bitmap.php. In Version 1.15, the value is set in line 109 of the file, in the more recent version 1.18, the code is in line 272. I just changed the value of 80 to 95, and newly uploaded images got better thumbnails. Note that changing the sourcecode of MediaWiki like this might be a bad idea if you don't know exactly what you are doing. For instance, after an update, you are likely to lose this change, or you might even corrupt your MediaWiki installation.

Older thumbnails are not automatically recreated (see below for a solution to that).

Sharpening
Sharpening the image can improve the quality; however, when applied with wrong parameters or applied on certain images, it can decrease the images quality as well. For my images, if found less sharpening then the standard value of "0x0.4" better; I'm currently using a value of "0x0.4". This value can be set in LocalSettings.php by setting the variable $wgSharpenParameter (e.g. $wgSharpenParameter = "0x0.2"; ). Again, note that different values might be better for different applications.

Recreating the older thumbnails
Changing the values as suggested above only influences newly created thumbnails. Thumbnails already created are not automatically rerendered just by changing those parameters. The official way to recreate older thumbnails is to set the variable $wgThumbnailEpoch to the current date; any older Thumbnails are recreated when they are read the next time. See http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Manual:$wgThumbnailEpoch

In my current installation, there seems to be a bug that causes the wgThumbnailEpoch to be ignored (I guess it is https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=20159). The bug should already be resolved in the current release of MediaWiki. The workaround I used was to delete the thumbnail directory at ./images/thumbs/ - this results in all thumbnails accessed to be recreated automatically. Be sure to backup the thumbs directory before deleting it; certain configuration settings of your MediaWiki might prevent an automatic recreation of the thumbnails. In that case, you might still favor the low-quality thumbs over non at all.Christian Wirthhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12687078604890565949noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3976898942253309934.post-17713512603095162592012-01-31T10:28:00.000-08:002012-01-31T10:28:32.732-08:00games-wiki.org now with more then 250 descriptions of gamesThe page www.games-wiki.org now hosts more than 250 pages with game descriptions.

Christian Wirthhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12687078604890565949noreply@blogger.com0
