Unzoomed.com #30: 2/6 🟡🟢⚪️⚪️⚪️⚪️ (2024-02-17)

SPOILER ALTERT: I will solve today's Unzoomed.com here!

First round:

  • There is a castle (B1) in the image center. Greenish copper roof. Looks "European".
  • Green grass in the parks, road conditions and color, general style of buildings, a none-too-strict grid, all confirm Europe.
  • Roads: Cars drive on the right (rules out UK), bottom right shows "27" written on the road several times (direction indicator to highway 27?), and top right shows a "Bus" lane.
  • Very few PV visible on rooftops, so rather north (Scandinavia?)
  • For major Scandinavian cities I miss water bodies - for cities like Helsinki, Stockholm, Kopenhagen, Oslo, etc., I would expect to see some river or beachfront.
  • The building (B2) just right to the castle seems to have a familiar structure next to the road.
Wild guess: B2 reminds me of the European Court of Justice in ... uhm ... Strasbourg? So let's try Strasbourg, France.

Round 1: Strasbourg is 110 km away 🟡

Awesome! So quite close, next closes major city maybe?

My first thought was Karlsruhe, Germany. But Karlsruhe has a very distinctly shaped castle with roads leading directly to it, and I don't see that here. And Karlsruhe is also close to the river Rhine, also missing this major river here.

The final clue is the train station north of the city center. It's under construction, and has some distinct white domes on top. That could be "Stuttgart 21", the heavily disputed new train station in Stuttgart, Germany. Let's try "Stuttgart".

2/6 🟡🟢⚪️⚪️⚪️⚪️

Correct solution is "Stuttgart, Germany".

What about my guesses:

B1 is the "New Castle Stuttgart", which is now used by regional government departments.

For B2, I was actually thinking of the European Court of Human Rights, which is actually round-shaped; the EuGH is in Luxembourg, not Strasbourg. B2 is a rectangle, only the entrance stairs are round. Well, wrong guess, but still lead me to a city close-by. B2 actually is the "Landtag", the regional parliament.
